Harrison Memorial Hospital’s Laboratory Department Receives Accreditation from the College of American Pathologists
Harrison Memorial Hospital (HMH) Laboratory in Cynthiana, KY, has been awarded reaccreditation by the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) following a recent onsite inspection.
The laboratory’s medical director, Edward Tanous, M.D., was notified of this national recognition and commended for the continued excellence in laboratory services. The U.S. federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program—established in the early 1960s—as equal to or more rigorous than federal inspection programs.
During the CAP accreditation process, which is designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients, inspectors review two years of laboratory records and quality control results. They also evaluate staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety protocols, and overall management practices. HMH undergoes this accreditation review every two years and has maintained CAP Accreditation since 2006.
“This reaccreditation affirms the strength, consistency, and dedication of our laboratory team,” said Dr. Kathy Tussey, HMH Chief Executive Officer. “Our staff works tirelessly to ensure patients receive timely, reliable results, and CAP accreditation reflects the exceptional quality and safety we strive to uphold every day.”
The HMH Laboratory Department is a full-service laboratory, offering quick and convenient testing for outpatients and providing private areas for blood draws performed by qualified phlebotomists. The outpatient lab is located on the first floor in the same area as the radiology and respiratory departments, immediately to the right after exiting the front lobby. Operating hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The laboratory is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and works to accommodate patient needs. Special arrangements for testing can be made with advance notice. Laboratory staff includes phlebotomists, medical laboratory technicians (MLT), and medical laboratory scientists (MLS).
A wide range of tests and screenings are available, including complete blood count (CBC), comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), basic metabolic panel (BMP), prothrombin time (PT) for patients taking blood thinners, extensive thyroid testing, cancer markers, lipid panels, urinalysis, and molecular testing.
HMH partners with Pathology and Cytology Laboratories in Lexington, KY. Dr. Edward Tanous serves as the medical director of the HMH laboratory.
