HMH Earns National Re-accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer
Harrison Memorial Hospital (HMH) is proud to announce that it has once again earned a three-year re-accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC), a testament to the hospital’s commitment to excellence in cancer care. First accredited in 2018, HMH recently underwent a rigorous site visit and achieved outstanding results.
The CoC accreditation is awarded only to those cancer programs that meet 38 stringent quality care standards and demonstrate excellence in comprehensive, patient-centered care. Accreditation is granted following an in-depth survey every three years.
“As a CoC-accredited program, we demonstrate to our community that quality cancer care is a daily commitment,” said Kathy Tussey, HMH Chief Executive Officer. “Our goal is to provide excellence within a program that can diagnose, treat, rehabilitate, and support patients through every stage of their cancer journey. The Commission on Cancer provides us with standards to deliver timely, appropriate, evidence-based care.”
HMH’s multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment includes a collaborative team of surgeons, medical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, nurses, and other specialists. This model promotes improved communication and coordinated care plans for patients.
HMH’s cancer program includes:
- A weekly oncology clinic staffed by medical oncologist Dr. Christy Sapp
- Infusion therapy administered by Oncology Nursing Society-certified nurses
- Access to clinical trials, genetic counseling, and patient navigation services
- Psychosocial support and individualized survivorship care planning
The CoC Accreditation Program also requires HMH to maintain a cancer registry, contributing data to the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) - the world’s largest clinical disease registry. This data is analyzed nationally to guide quality improvement efforts and benchmark performance.
At HMH, the Commission on Cancer Committee is made up of a diverse team of medical professionals, including physicians, nurses, therapists, pharmacists, and administrative coordinators who help champion cancer care services and ensure compliance with CoC standards.
As a member of the UK Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network, HMH patients benefit from seamless care coordination should they require additional treatment at the Markey Cancer Center.
There are more than 1,500 CoC-accredited programs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, collectively diagnosing and/or treating over 70 percent of newly diagnosed cancer patients. Choosing a CoC-accredited center like HMH ensures access to advanced cancer care—right here, close to home.
