COMMISSION ON CANCER ACCREDITATION

In August 2021, the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons, granted three-year accreditation to our cancer program at Harrison Memorial Hospital. The Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) has granted three-year accreditation to the cancer program at Harrison Memorial Hospital (HMH). To earn voluntary CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care. Because it is a CoC-accredited cancer center, HMH takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating  cancer as a complex group of diseases that requires consultation among surgeons, medical and  radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists.  This multidisciplinary partnership results in improved patient care.

UK MARKEY CANCER CENTER AFFILIATE NETWORK

Harrison Memorial Hospital is a member of the UK Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network. So what does that mean for you as the patient? This Network provides many of the benefits of oncology diagnosis, treatment and research at the local level. Our vision is for all Kentuckians to have access to quality cancer care regardless of where they live in the region. By offering advanced treatment and support services to all Kentuckians, and doing so with compassion and respect, we make patients and their families a priority when they are faced with the difficult diagnosis of cancer.

The UK Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network has a goal to deliver advanced cancer care to smaller communities throughout the state, providing convenience for the patient. However, there are times when treatment is needed beyond the capacity of community hospitals like Harrison Memorial Hospital. That’s when HMH patients will continue to receive high-quality care in Lexington at UK Markey Cancer Center. The UK Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network can assist in a smooth transition from HMH to UK Markey Cancer Center and back home again.

HOW DO I BENEFIT FROM THE NETWORK?

The UK Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network provides cancer-specific education and training for community doctors, nurses and staff to ensure the most up-to-date cancer information is available
to providers.

  • Network hospitals, like HMH, gain access to specialized programs that may not be available in other small communities, such as genetic counseling and fertility preservation.
  • Harrison Memorial Hospital is currently pursuing accreditation from the Commission on Cancer (CoC), which recognizes hospitals for high-quality, comprehensive and multi-disciplinary cancer care. UK Markey Cancer Center is supporting our efforts.
  • You, as a patient, have access to the most up-to-date treatments right here at home, minimizing travel outside your local area.
  • Your family members have access to as many resources as possible locally, so they can focus their energy on supporting you. Treatment provided locally means your family members spend less time traveling and more time supporting you.

Together, we host local cancer prevention and education activities, such as health fairs and cancer screening programs.
